Checking the bag from the outside 1. Check the material If the bag being sold to you is made of canvas or any material that looks and feels like synthetic leather, do not buy it. Are they small and sewn into the seam? Clear plastic, white plastic? The seller refuses to refund for a return. Based on the photos, my impression is that the bag is authentic. The issues you mentioned sound consistent with many vintage Coach bags. Vintage hangtags, for example, were often made of two pieces of leather back-to-back, suede sides glued together and smooth sides both stamped with the Coach logo to make a double sided tag.

Vintage Coach bags are really varied in materials. Hello Christine, I just stumbled upon your Tacoma Goodwill store, blog spot, and got about half way through the first paragraph on tips for authenticating Coach bags, and recognized your words o f wisdom. I had been a member of purseforum. I thought you had a wealth of information to share and your posts helped me in learning more about how to authenticate Designer, and Designer vintage items, in general. I know enough about Coach, Gucci, Swarovsky, and a few other names, to be a tad dangerous.

Thank you for your kind words, though! Does it sound real? Hi Sandi, In reading your description, nothing jumped out at me as cause for concern. Was there something about the bag that made you think it might not be authentic? There may be others as well. Hello, I am a bit perplexed regarding the hardware of a Coach Bag I bought that had all the traits of being authentic except for one thing. The zippers are marked YKK everywhere, including inside and all the hardware appears to be brass but the zipper track itself is plastic.

One of the pictures of an authentic bag in the above article appears to have the metal hardware and a plastic zipper track. Would I be able to send you a picture for you to see? Hello Michele, Yes, some authentic bags have plastic zipper tracks instead of metal. I recently purchased a coach or what I thought was a coach bag on ebay I bought it from an awesome ebay giving works seller, but not sure I got the real thing.

I purchased the signature tote, but the gold lettering on the creed is worn off, but still engraved in and some of the gold tone hardware is rubbed silver—do you know if coach uses solid brass only? Recently i bought a coach madison floral small wristlet and found out that the rose printed on the fabric has slightly different compare to some i saw online.

As i saw through other websites, some roses were up and down or right and left or maybe there is only one big rose in the middle. Can this be considered fake? As far as I can tell, the pattern is pretty consistent for that wristlet.

If you have that exact style but the pattern is off, it may be a counterfeit. I found that same logo stamped descreatly into the side portion of my bag as well upon careful inspection that I had no idea even existed on the bags something to look into though!

Hi, I am wondering if coach ever uses bonded leather? I purchased a coach brown leather madison maggie bag — everything seems like excellent quality, seams, lining, hardware, creed, straps are obviously quality leather — but when I pull up the edge of the inside seam — so I can see the bottom of the leather — it seems to be white fibers — not obviously plastic, but almost like bonded leather.

This is a very very soft and shiny leather. How good are the really good fakes? The good fakes can be very convincing. Where did you purchase it? I purchased a patchwork scribble tote on eBay. Everything about it looks authentic except it has a signature lining.

Do some patchwork bags have signature lining? Is there another way I can tell? Should I report seller and ask for refund? Patchwork bags do sometimes have signature lining. They are an exception in that regard. I hope this helps! I recently order 8 bags from Coach outlet online and the bags came from China. Sorry to hear you were duped into buying fake bags; I strongly suspect that they are counterfeit.

If you got them from another website calling itself a Coach outlet, and especially if they have no numbers, they are counterfeit.

As for China: most Coach bags are made in China these days, but be wary of any seller who ships bags from China. Also be wary of any website offering extremely discounted new Coach bags. You can get deals from the Factory Outlet and ShopGoodwill. This is the best resource!!! LOL thanks so much!! I just purchased a leather coach bag and It does not have anything on the zipper or a patch inside showing that this bag is a coach.

Does that mean it is fake? If the bag is missing the Coach Creed, it is not authentic. I just purchased two handbags from coachfactory. Are they authentic? If you purchased them from coachfactory. Thank you so much.

I am planning on giving these handbags as Christmas gifts and was hoping they are authentic. Appreciate your help. Thank you so much for this information. General First, know that some counterfeit bags appear to be nearly perfect and some authentic bags may seem a little imperfect. It is important to familiarize yourself with Coach products in person. Visit a Coach store or authorized Coach retailer and learn how they feel and what they tend to look like. Leather Coach uses various types of leather, but something they all have in common is that they are of a nice quality. Unless it has been severely mistreated and dried out, it does not crack or seem to be damaged if folded in half.

Coach leather is also not paper thin and prone to peeling though some is easy to scuff. Different varieties of leather — pebbled and suede, notably, obviously feel different.

This does not mean the bag is counterfeit. Signature bag fabric In signature bags, the C pattern is properly aligned, generally either at a 90 degree or 45 degree angle. Coach tries to connect the classic signature pattern fabric at seams in ways that look attractive instead of messy. Fake turnlock vs authentic turnlock. Share this: Twitter Facebook Reddit. Hi PM, Sorry to say, but definitely a fake. Thanks Stan. Where specifically do I look for the YKK or other markings you indicated on the zipper?

Keep up the good work! Hello Lily, Based on the photos, my impression is that the bag is authentic. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on Coach; your information is invaluable. Im about to buy a coach bag But the c is everywhere. For example, they use real, high-quality leather.

So if the bag appears overly smooth and plastic-y, or seems to be made from canvas, it's likely to be made from a synthetic like pleather, which would make it a fake. Look at the stitching. The seams and stitching of Coach bags are even and clean. Each stitch should be the exact same length. They should also be straight and not over-stitched i. This means you will see only one line of thread, not multiples stitched over each other.

Check the lining. Most Coach purses will have a solid-color, satin lining. However, bags without the 'CC' print on the exterior may have it on the interior instead. This may not always be the case, though, as some bags may not have the CC pattern on either the outside or the inside. Keep in mind that a Coach bag should never have the CC pattern on both the inside and outside. Method 2.

Look at the 'CC' pattern. Bags with the signature C design follow a very set arrangement. For example, both Cs should be horizontal, facing each other, and touching. They should also start in the center of the front panel on the bag, and be structured to where you could cut the bag in half down the middle and have matching patterns on each side.

There shouldn't just be Cs all over the place. Also make sure the Cs are actually Cs and not Gs. From a distance, the difference may not be noticeable. Look for labels. Labels are commonly found on the hardware, outside of the bag, and on the inside of the bag. For example, each bag should come with the Coach leather creed, which is a leather patch embossed on the inside containing the bag's serial number.

If there isn't a leather patch, the serial number for the bag should at least be stamped on the inside, not printed. Bags from the s will also not have a serial number, and bags from the s and s will have a serial number with only numbers, not letters and numbers like current bags. If the number is only inked, that's a red flag. Check the logo tags. Many Coach purses also come with logo tags. These are leather tags attached to the purse with a beaded chain. The trim of the tag should match the trim on the bag, and the COACH logo should be raised, not imprinted.

Take a look at the zippers. Zippers on a real Coach bag will have a pull made of either leather or rings. Some, but not all, Coach bags will also have the letters "YKK" engraved into the metal of the zipper. Pulls made of another material are typically indicators of a fake.

Compare the bag to pictures on the Coach website. If anything about the bag seems off to you, comparing it to an image of an authentic version is a good idea. It can help you determine where the labels should be on that particular bag, as well as how the bag should look; what the pattern should be, the inside lining, and the logo tags.

Method 3. Determine if the deal is too good to be true. Even the used bags can retail for a hefty price. If a new Coach bag is selling for a cheap price, that's a good sign that it's a fake. Keep in mind the actual pricing of the bag you want and compare it the one you're considering buying. Are they similar? Pay close attention to the vendor.

If a vendor avoids your questions, looks guilty, or gives vague answers when you ask about the authenticity of a bag, it's a good sign that you should be wary.

Ask if they accept returns. If they don't, they may not be credible. If the vendor has a lot of the same type of bag, this is also a red flag as it usually means they're replicas.

Inspect the material in this instance. Are the bags made of fabric or cheap leather? If the seller is advertising Coach bags that are labeled as "designer-inspired" or "Grade A replicas", they're fake. This terminology is used so that the producer of the fake bags won't get in legal trouble. Mall vendors and street vendors, as well as online auction sites such as eBay , will often sell fakes.
