Why is iris the pokemon champion

I will keep this brief and only mention only important information about her though she doesn't have too much too talk about anyways. She is first introduced as young but talented and powerful Dragon Trainer.

She trained Bianca to help better her as a battler and acted as her bodyguard when her Munna was stolen. In both games, she is mentioned as an extremely talented and bright battler. After that she can be talked to, but no longer plays any role in the story.

Well, let's start first with what she has going for her as a Champion. There is admittedly some strong merits to being Champion and totally makes sense within the narrative. First off, it is established that she is a massively talented trainer who is still young. That gives her room to grow and become extremely powerful as a trainer. Secondly, she is a Gym Leader or more specifically, the final Gym Leader, which lends even more credence to her strength as a trainer.

Now these two reasons are pretty valid for a character to be a Champion but there are two reasons why Iris shouldn't be the Champion of Black 2 and White 2. The first reason is that she doesn't appear enough in the narrative and doesn't interact enough to the player for there to be any payoff for her becoming Champion. The second reason is there are a few characters who would fit the role of Champion better than her which will be addressed shortly. Now that I explained why Iris shouldn't be Champion, I can give suggestions on better candidates for filling that role and explain why they would be better at filling the role of Champion compared to Iris.

One of the most predictable choices but a strong choice at that. Cheren has much of the same qualifications as Iris but with a more developed and interesting character. It also has the satisfying conclusion to his character arc.

So why does this work? Well not only has he been established as a talented and powerful Trainer but it also shows his maturity and gives him ample opportunity to anwser the question Alder asked him two years ago. So how would this play out? Well, I think that putting him as Gym Leader is a mistake. He is too strong to be a Gym Leader and being a Champion allows him to retain his team.

His team would be more varied than Iris' allowing for his team to be more balanced and challenging. Within the narrative, he would be more of an onlooker watching the player progress and giving helpful advice when needed.

He can still be affiliated with the Pokemon School but instead of being a teacher, he is more of a sponsor the newly retired Alder could take his place as teacher. He could also ask philosophical questions to the player and Hugh the same way that Alder did to him two years ago.

This would allow Hugh to step back and think about his goals outside of saving his sister's Purrlion which would allow us to see a different aspect of him and make him a deeper character. I could see him being very much influenced by Alder but still taking battles seriously. Another very obvious but still potent choice for Champion, N would be a strong candidate for many of the same reasons as Cheren.

He has shown himself to be a capable battler before and he has a special bond with Pokemon, making him distinct. It would also complete his character growth and conclude his character arc as he embraces Pokemon battling and the bond between trainer and Pokemon.

He would play the same role he does currently in Black 2 and White 2 but when challenging the Pokemon League, he reforms the League and Victory Road from the remains of the old Plasma Castle and reminisces about his up bring and shares it with the player before challenging him with his Legendary Dragon. A not as obvious choice and a weaker choice than Cheren and N, but one I believe can still work. Of course, Drayden is a massively talented trainer who uses powerful Dragon types.

He plays a role similar to Iris and appears in the game only as much as she does, so why do I think he'd be a better Champion? The first thing he has over Iris is experience. The second thing is that by making Drayden massively powerful and taking over the mantle of Champion, organically Iris would take the role of Gym Leader of Opelucid City and mayor despite her young age.

This allows Iris to have a goal of filling Drayden's roles and surpassing him someday as a Trainer and becoming Champion. His role in the story would be replaced by Iris and he would be there to watch the progress of the player and Iris and starting talking up how Iris would surpass him someday. Iris would state having trouble running the Gym and city and gaining the respect of the people due to her young age and lacking Drayden's guidance but learns to run both and gain respect by the endgame.

I think that there is a little but more that could be done if Drayden was the Champion. An odd and somewhat absurd choice depending who you ask but making her a Champion can give massive growths to her character. Of course, that requires changing her ending from Black and White. Instead of being content in the truth of her lack of talent for battling, she works to change the truth with the help of the player, Cheren and Iris to become a powerful rival that is fought at the end of the game becoming just as tough as Cheren.

As a Champion, she keeps her ditzy and scatterbrained personality but she is no longer meek and self doubting and can confront bad guys without flinching showing the growth from her journey. Ability : Rivalry. Ability : Sheer Force. Ability : Mold Breaker.

Anime prowess is irrelevant here, if the two were connected you wouldn't be able to defeat Cynthia period who is demonstrated as near God-Tier. Age is also irrelevant, as the protagonist displays time and time again within their respective games. Originally Posted by Yato [ Original Post ].
