While House and Senate Democrats have proposed serious alternatives to the cuts that employ a balanced approach, many Republicans continue to push the severe spending-cuts-only formula as the only viable solution to our deficit problem. With less than 48 hours until devastating across-the-board spending cuts known as the sequester take effect, many Republicans are still expressing their unwavering support for these cuts instead of working with Democrats to avert them. However, a closer look reveals that support for the sequester contradicts promises made to their constituents in their legislative priorities, and could have an impact on their districts.
These cuts could be incredibly harmful to our national defense, our economy, and our national welfare. Speaker, we continue an unfortunate and unnecessary countdown to the irrational and reckless automatic cuts the Republican policies will impose. The countdown stands at three days. As Republicans continue to waste time and welcome the draconian spending cuts known as the sequester, the American people are calling them out for it.

This is the least confidence building Congress — last Congress and this Congress — in which I have ever served. It is taking us from fiscal crisis to fiscal crisis. It is creating cliffs where no cliffs ought to exist, and they undermine the confidence of business, America, Americans, and, indeed, the rest of the world that needs a stable and secure America to ensure that we keep the kind of stability that Americans want here at home and around the world.
Speaker, the President spoke to us last night and he talked to us about avoiding the sequester. Over the past several weeks Republicans have increasingly shown their support of the sequester, which is due to take effect in just over two weeks. Speaker, tonight the President will once again walk into this chamber and lay out a vision for how to strengthen America in the years ahead.
As the March 1 st deadline quickly approaches, there is still time to stop the automatic spending cuts, known as sequestration, from occurring. Unfortunately, many Republicans have indicated that they are willing to let sequestration happen in spite of the harmful impact it will have on the economy, our national defense, and on working Americans:.
I voted for an amendment to that bill by Reps. Schrader, Wolf, Cooper, and Gibson, which reiterated the importance of a balanced framework for deficit reduction that includes both revenues and spending cuts, like the one put forward by the Bowles-Simpson commission. While I do not support every item proposed by that commission, I firmly support the need for deficit reduction that is balanced, and does not occur on the backs of the most vulnerable.
