Gallup's trends, including some extending back four decades, can be found here. Gallup has previously found that Americans have greatly overestimated the U. Americans' estimate of the proportion of gay people in the U. In , Gallup asked Americans to estimate the proportion of men and women who are gay or lesbian, respectively. As Gallup pointed out in its initial estimate of the entire LGBT population in , "Exactly who makes up the LGBT community and how this group should be measured is a subject of some debate," and "there are a number of ways to measure lesbian, gay, and bisexual orientation, and transgender status.
Sexual orientation can be assessed by measuring identity as well as sexual behaviors and attractions. Still, all available estimates of the actual gay and lesbian population in the U. Overestimations of the nation's gay population may in part be due to the group's outsized visibility.
But Americans have overestimated the sizes of other minority groups in the past as well, including U. The National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles Natsal is the most reliable source of information on what Britons do in private, and has taken place every 10 years since But there is a clear gradient with age, with a much higher proportion in younger people, particularly in younger women: the percentage for women between 16 and 24 jumps nearly fourfold.
Sexual identity is also now part of official government statistics. But only 0. So is this evidence of bias in the Natsal participants or a sign of reluctance to open up in a general household survey that is largely concerned with mundane matters such as shopping habits?
That works out to a total of nearly 1. But, just as in the UK, the routine US National Health Interview Survey NHIS comes up with a lower figure for bisexuality than the dedicated sex surveys: it seems plausible that there is less willingness to acknowledge bisexual identity in routine surveys, whereas those who clearly identify themselves as gay or lesbian are willing to be more upfront.
Same-sex sexual behaviour can come in all degrees of intensity. Respondents are asked about activity at any age, so adolescent fumblings counted.
By way of comparison, these analyses suggest that the size of the LGBT community is roughly equivalent to the population of New Jersey. The number of adults who have had same-sex sexual experiences is approximately equal to the population of Florida while those who have some same-sex attraction comprise more individuals than the population of Texas. The surveys highlighted in this report demonstrate the viability of sexual orientation and gender identity questions on large-scale national population-based surveys.
States and municipal governments are often testing grounds for the implementation of new LGBT-related public policies or can be directly affected by national-level policies. Adding sexual orientation and gender identity questions to national data sources that can provide local-level estimates and to state and municipal surveys is critical to assessing the potential efficacy and impact of such policies.
Download the brief. Since the NSFG data only survey year olds, this estimate assumes that patterns in this group are the same for those aged 45 and older. It may be that older adults are less likely to report same-sex attraction. If so, this estimate may somewhat overstate same-sex attraction among all adults.

Key Findings An estimated 3. Among adults who identify as LGB, bisexuals comprise a slight majority 1. Bisexuals comprise more than half of the lesbian and bisexual population among women in eight of the nine surveys considered in the brief.
Estimates of those who report any lifetime same-sex sexual behavior and any same-sex sexual attraction are substantially higher than estimates of those who identify as LGB. An estimated 19 million Americans 8. Understanding the size of the LGBT population is a critical first step to informing a host of public policy and research topics.
The surveys highlighted in this report demonstrate the viability of sexual orientation and gender identity questions on large national population-based surveys. Laws that explicitly mention sexual orientation primarily protect or harm lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. That said, transgender people who are lesbian, gay or bisexual can be affected by laws that explicitly mention sexual orientation.
Gender identity and expression are independent of sexual orientation, and transgender people may identify as heterosexual, lesbian, gay or bisexual. These laws also can apply to people who are not transgender, but whose sense of gender or manner of dress does not adhere to gender stereotypes. We appreciate you signing up for the MAP newsletter.
